Choosing a Visual Studio Workflow Type

Greetz!

I have a requirement for an approval workflow which is not a straight forward 1-2-3 approval. In regular Approval workflows an event that is entered is always set to a Pending status. In my requirements, if a user is the owner of the room being scheduled the status is set to approved autoatically. The only way I know to do this is through code. But it gets complicated since the status can be different depending on if the user is the event owner or room owner and what the previous status was, etc. Regardless of who the user is any editing of an approved event resets it to pending whereas in my rules this isn't always the case. Soooo, I'm wondering if it would be easier if I used the the state machine model where I explicitly control the statussing of an item? I have the list (clendar) set to requiring approval.

Thanks
