REST equivalent for people.asmx

Is there a REST equivalent for the ResolvePrincipals web service (people.asmx)? I have not been able to find anything similar in the documentation. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/people.people.resolveprincipals%28v=office.12%29.aspx

I tried _vti_bin/ListData.svc/UserInformationList, but this does not return users who are not in Sharepoint.
