Increasing MaxControls in Web.config for SharePoint Site

<SafeMode MaxControls="200" CallStack="false" DirectFileDependencies="10"

We have reached Max User Controls of 200 on our SharePoint Masterpage and need to increase this in the web.config to account for the new controls we are adding. Just wondering if anyone has any experience in increasing this number and at what point did you start seeing affect in the performance.
