SharePoint List Definition

Hi,

Might sound like a simple one, will confirm anyways -

I have seen many team members adding List definition and list instances in Visual Studio solution. A lot of these list instances can be created from SharePoint provided list definitions also and custom list definitions can be avoided.

Is there a reason why adding a custom list definition and then creating instance off of the custom definition would be better? Or should the recommendation be to create list instance off of an oob available definitions.
